Dispatch sent me to a wreck on the outskirts of town. The caller reported seeing a vehicle go off the roadway and into some thick trees near the tracks. They couldn’t provide an exact location, only a vague eight-mile stretch of highway based on landmarks.

The highway ran parallel to the train tracks, bordered by dense trees.

I began my search, driving slowly along the shoulder and scanning the area. After looping around for the first time, I didn’t find anything.

I requested additional units and a drone to assist in the search, then rolled down the windows as I continued on my second pass. About two miles in, I heard a voice shout, “Over here!” Loud and unmistakable.

I called out to dispatch and ran into the thick wooded area, where I eventually found the wreck. The vehicle had crossed the tracks and struck a tree. Unfortunately, the male driver had succumbed to his injuries. Then, I heard a soft cry coming from the back. It was an infant. Fortunately, the child was unharmed and was handed over to EMS. We combed the area but didn’t find anyone else.

Later, we learned from the family that the male driver had an extensive medical history which most likely caused him to leave the roadway.

Do you think it was the baby’s father’s spirit that led me to wreck?

If you’re interested, I’ve got a video about this and similar stories from fellow officers on my YT channel: “Policing the Shadows.”
