I am considering setting up spin down for my unraid server to save considerable energy and if it is worth it or not, and looking to see what kind of downsides there are in 2023.

The main use of the spinning drives is plex. I have a handful of users my family and some friends.

I have 13 HDD in the array and 2 parity, most of my drives are 10tb, the newer ones obviously I’m going higher capacity. Parity are 18tb. I use a DS4243 connected to my server to store all the drives.

What kind of impact will spin down have on things like SABNZB or most importantly Plex? Most of my other services live entirely on the cache with no array involvement. What will browsing Plex for me or a user do, spin up a drive as that file is played, or spin them ALL up when simply browsing the library and playing anything? If any plex activity spins them all up vs just the needed drive is there any way around that? What kind of slowdowns will we experience when the drives are spun down and we want to use plex?
