I’m a single woman, I’m also a homeowner. When things go wrong in this house, there’s no man with a toolbelt on hand to help, which is fine, I’ve learned to fix most things myself now in order to save money - I’ve received some extortionate quotes from tradies over the years, who I guess see a woman alone and think I don’t know better.

Something I know how to fix is jammed windows, I’ve done it twice in the past, it’s usually a 10-minute job with some WD40, a wedge, and an Allen key. But the other day, my bedroom window became stuck (in the middle of a heatwave) and would not become unstuck, no matter what I tried. So frustrating! I had the knowledge, I had the tools, but was getting nowhere.

There is only one dedicated window company in this town, and I had a less than stellar experience when I eventually swallowed my pride and called them up to ask for help. I wasn’t allowed to get a word in edgeways aside from giving the bloke my contact details and telling him the window was stuck. Naturally, I was not looking forward to the call-out arranged for today, I figured I’d get the same dismissive pig that I’d had over the phone.

Fortunately, I did not.

The guy that showed up today actually took the time to listen, seemed genuinely pleased that he had a customer that knew what they were talking about, and applauded my attempt to fix it myself.

In the end, he did pretty much the exact same thing I had tried to do, only with better tools and more brute strength. Because of that, and my excellent tea-making skills, he’s knocked some money off the call-out fee and left labour fees off altogether, which I’m extremely grateful for.

It’s really brightened my day, what a lovely man.
