I have seen posts about decent alternatives, but none asking about the best alternative. I try to use as much free open source software as I can, and know there has to be something comparable to photoshop as open source out there, similar to how open source 3d animation software blender is comparable to unity.

anyone have any opinions on the best free open source alternative to photoshop?
