Original Title: Donald Trump calls Ron DeSantis’ 6-week abortion ban in Florida “a terrible thing and a terrible mistake”, doesn’t commit to federal ban. Republicans are running scared because they’re starting to realize coming for women’s rights is going to be their downfall
Link to article on Trump’s comments:
DeSantis signed a 6-week abortion ban in Florida in April but it’s not in effect yet as it gets litigated in the courts. At the time he was polling close behind Trump for the Republican nomination and ahead of President Biden in head-to-head matchups for the General Election. Since he signed the ban, he’s tanked from being just behind Trump at 30% to being miles off at 10% and is now falling behind a wacky tech startup guy with no political experience, as well as losing to Biden in all of the head-to-head polls.
And what a change in tune from Donny, who went from boasting about being “the most Pro-Life president in history” and touting that he seated the justices that overturned Roe to calling 6-week abortion bans ‘terrible’ and admitting that abortion is costing them elections.
Republicans are scared. They know attacking women’s rights is horrifically unpopular, but they have to please their crackpot base. And 2024 is around the corner, which is their last chance to win and institute authoritarianism before Millennials and Gen-Z (who vote 2-to-1 liberal) become the majority of the US electorate and the demographics shift. And for Trump it’s his last chance to get back into office and pardon himself for all his crimes to avoid prison.
Abortion rights have been widely credited with stopping the Republican “red wave” in the Midterm Elections last year, and conservatives have now lost 7 out of 7 elections when it has been on the ballot directly since Roe v. Wade fell. The world has moved beyond the values of the 1960s that conservatives inhabit, and it looks like in 2024, women’s rights and reproductive health will be the biggest firewall to protecting our democracy from Trump and the fascist right.
