About 4 weeks ago or so I went to see an oral surgeon. My dentist told me I needed to get my wisdom teeth removed and he recommended the oral surgeon right next door. Now my mom’s cousin works in the dentist’s office and she also recommended him. She said he was pricey but great. The first red flag was the office staff making a consult appointment for Friday and the wisdom teeth removal for the following Tuesday. I was like?? The second red flag was them not giving me paperwork to fill out the first day. I filled it out on Friday. The third red flag was the assistant. She was walking very slowly, had slow speech, and kept putting the wrong month on everyone’s information. I don’t want to be rude, but I think she was high. The fourth red flag was the dentist calling me princess and sweetheart. Not to mention him tickling my armpit boob. I’m a 24-year-old woman.
So during the consultation, the assistant handed me paperwork. Tells me to sign all the highlighted areas. My mom wanted me to ask about malignant hypothermia. My uncle has malignant hypothermia. As an infant, I needed ear surgery and the doctors did not put me under normal because of the malignant hypothermia. The fifth red flag was the oral surgeon telling me they use different anesthesia than doctors. Ummmm? That sounds like a lie to me. The sixth red flag was him barely looking into my mouth. He said, “It’ll take me five minutes to do the surgery then you’ll be done”. He was trying to reassure me because I told him I was afraid to die. There were some other red flags. Anyways, the guy wanted $500 for a CT scan and 6k total for the removal. I said hell no.
I went to another oral surgeon (my dad knows this one) and he said, “I don’t want to be put under because of your uncle’s condition.” He wants to be extra careful. He explained shit to me, listened to me, and didn’t touch me, or call me silly pet names. The kicker? The surgery is going to cost 1.9k without insurance.
I swear to God I would’ve died if I went to the first guy. That guy was all over the place like ADD or something, his assistants weren’t the best, and he wasn’t the best either…
TL;DR The oral surgeon did not take my family’s history of malignant hypothermia seriously. Told me that dental offices use different sedatives than doctors. I went to another surgeon and he actually listened to me and took my history seriously. He is not putting me under as a precaution. I will get laughing gas and be awake during my wisdom teeth removal.
