I met one of my colleagues at a job I recently started straight out of college. He’s an older man in his 60s. He came up to my desk to introduce himself and he asked a few questions about me. We had a perfectly friendly conversation for a minute or two. I mentioned that I had gone to school in a different state. I explained that I had relocated from that state for this job.
He then asked me if I had just graduated. I said yes. He said, “Oh, you look older than I would expect you to look.” I was like, “Excuse me?” And he completely had an opportunity to try to backtrack on what he said, but he kept going. He said, “You know, you don’t look 22, like a recent college graduate. You look older.” And I said icily, “I’m 25.” And he replies, “25, very old!” in a joking way.
We work in cubicles, so I know my coworkers heard this conversation with this man telling me I look old. So besides for it being offensive, it was also embarrassing. I know everyone else was cringing to themselves.
Aging is so hard on women already. Why comment on a women’s age like that? As I get older, I’m working on accepting my aging. Even though society says I’m worthless after 40. But this just was so triggering.
