I posted in here a few weeks ago about how my dad physically assaulted me, which included choking me. I wanted to provide a little update:

I did it! I faced my dad in court. My dad took the plea deal I said I was okay with offering.

When the judge asked him why he would do this to his daughter, instead of saying “I never should have” he started trying to explain and the look on the judges face was pure disgust. His lawyer eventually had him stop talking and said “but he’s remorseful.” My dad never once said sorry.

I read my victim impact statement while looking him in the eye. My victims advocate and my husband both stood beside me while I read it, so that helped. The judge said she can tell I’m in tremendous pain and she thanked me for being so brave to come in and read my statement. She suggested I see a counselor after what happened to me. I told her I have a wonderful one and she smiled.

They are keeping a stay away order in place, he got the full fine, three years probation, and a mandatory mental health assessment. One thing was that he asked if he could still leave the country Friday for a “vacation.” That disgusted me. My parents never did family vacations because they “don’t want to spend the money.” However they can get a lawyer, pay a fine, and leave the country? It sickens me. Is this some sick celebration for them?

Oh well. I was brave today, and I’m so proud of myself. I received so much support and I am so grateful.
