In both videos and online, I’ve seen a lot of Japanese and other Asian countries get asked about Westerns “appropriating” their culture by wearing kimono, getting Japanese tattoos (tattoos in Japanese, Japanese-style art, and Irezumi), and Japanese people basically have no concept of what “cultural appropriation” even is. They’re not offended/they don’t find it offensive. Certain things may be embarrassing (getting art or characters you don’t know the meaning behind) but they’re not upset.
And often times in the comments, people say the idea of appropriation is simply an Western thing, if not outright just American.
Is it something other countries worry about/get offended by? Or do they not care?
(I’m not talking about blatant racism or things of that nature, like wearing a Native American headdress as a costume, black face/eye slanting.)
