I am a huge fan of games that allow you to build things. I grew up playing minecraft and the sims, and the building aspect was always one of my favourite parts. So, when I found out about house flipper, it seemed like exactly my kind of game. You get to clean up nasty houses and tjen redecorate to your heart’s content? Sign me up! Eagerly, I bought the game and downloaded it into my computer. It was great! There were some parts of the game that i found tedious, but the good parts more than made up for it. I complete all of the missions available at the time, and then moved into buying and flipping houses. But then strange things started to happen. My screen would go black, or artifacts would show up. I gave my computer the good ol smack treatment. Unfortunately, ol reliable didn’t quite work. Soon, my computer was nothing but an unusable display of glitch art! I googled the issue. Found some random tutorial, and followed it’s troubleshooting instructions. When all else failed, it was time…to reinstall windows. So I tried to reinstall it. It got stuck. I turned it off and on again. It got stuck again. Oh no. At this point I had to admit defeat. This had grown too challenging for my novice tech skills. So I sent it over to the guy who built the pc. It was not good, folks. The graphics card was busted. Luckily that was able to be repaired. The curroption i somehow caused while trying to fix it, however? not so easy. My whole hard drive had to be wiped. And folks, I did not keep backups. But I did have a secondary hard drive, which luckily for me was unaffected. And also held all my important files. I had already learnt this lesson when my main hard drive had to be wiped the first time, but clearly i still had to learn about backups. But if you think that’s the the TIFU incident? You’d be wrong. That happened years ago. No, the real fuck up is that I downloaded the damn game again. On the same computer. This time, my graphics card, still the same patched up graphics from back then, did not suffer an aneurysm after some time of playing the game. Instead, I was met with a rather ominous blue screen. Rebooted, the game told me to turn down my graphics settings, no biggie. Little did I know, I would become intimately familiar with that screen very soon. Watching videos? Bluescreen. Writing? Bluescreen. Gaming? Obviously, bluescreen. Trying to shut down the computer? Bluescreen. And so, my mediocre tech skills came to the rescue again! I analysed the errors thrown at me. And by that I mean I pasted them into google and hoped for the best. They seemed to point to damaged Ram. Fair enough, ram sticks were one of the few survivors of The Event, so they may be damaged and now showing signs of their death. I took out one of the sticks to test it. My monitor stopped working. Well, I suppose we found our culprit. I got a new ram stick and slapped that bad boy into my computer, feeling acomplished. It booted up. No more blue screens. For about a day. And then here they were again, new errors! scarier sounding errors! I was at my wits end with this thing! Out of desperation and no longer sufficiently supported by my mediocre tech skills, and out of money for repairs, i asked for help. “It sounds like it might be caused by a program you have installed” …It was then I remembered the gpu killer. I erroneously thought that as long as i didn’t run the game, it couldn’t be the cause of my problems. But not expecting much, I uninstalled it. It has been 2 days. There haven’t been any bluescreens since.
TL;DR: Downloaded house flipper, it flipped off my computer
