Here’s another homemade air purifier I’ve made. I was able to find everything I needed at a local store - a 20-inch box fan, a 20" x 20" MERV 10 filter, and painter’s tape. In my opinion, everyone should have one of these.

The tape is used to secure the filter to the back of the fan, to close up the panel gaps, and to provide a shroud in front. This ensures that air entering through the fan must go through the filter rather than bypass it through the panel gaps or corners of the fan.

This air purifier is good for sleeping, because the loud fan doubles as a white noise generator that masks the sounds of motorcycles, loud cars, sirens, noisy neighbors, loud people outside, etc.

A Corsi Rosenthal box based on the same 20-inch box fan would perform better but would take up more space, cost more to build, and be less portable.
