Hello.
I’m currently building a WotLK 3.3.5a private server. My objective isn’t to max out play counts nor make money. My objective is to tell stories, with the overall goal being to add more and more quests, and make it so people can play solo, with dungeons and raids being available, but not being the goal (if you so choose.)
Firstly, yeah, I like the idea of the open-world and playing solo (if you want) being the front and center, versus dungeons and raids. I’m tweaking the server’s experience rates, drop rates, vendor purchase rates, and more, to make leveling a bit quicker and more interesting. I’ve increased herbalism and mining node spawn rates to make those professions easier, and I get a mount to the player (and make the riding skill only cost 1s) at level 10.
I’m also planning on taking a concept from Guild Wars 2 and expanding on it. In every zone, I want to create an NPC who is a member of a new (NPC only) guild called, “The Cartographers”. These peeps are mapping the realm, and will offer daily quests as well as quest chains to help them (and you) map the realm.
I will also add another group, “The Entomologists”, who offer dailies and more centered around the wild life throughout the lands.
Both of these will offer a lot of stuff to do in the open-world, which will help with leveling, making money, and exploring.
Second, I want to make NPCs who will offer quests focused on the in-game professions. These quests will make the professions highly relevant, especially when you consider that I’ve lifted the server-side restriction on professionals from 2
to *
(all). This, again, will allow for more open-world content.
Finally, I’m planning on adding open-world elites that have “spilled” out from the dungeons and raids. I think this one speaks for itself.
Does this sound interesting? Let me know.
Cheers.
Edit: the server will be in Australia, but I don’t think that’ll affect much even the objective. The server will also be casual and you can come and go freely.
Edit: client will be 3.3.5a. I won’t be providing the client, nor will I require client-side patches. I’m staying well away from client-side patching until it becomes unavoidable.
